December 26 - January 17, 2015

To help make the holidays greener, the Solid Waste Division of the Department of Environmental Management will offer Treecycling!

Between 12/26/14 and 1/17/15, please leave your holiday trees in the designated areas (not in the trash chutes) at any of the County Solid Waste Division Facilities during normal business hours except for the Miloli‘i and Ocean View Transfer Stations.

Holiday trees being dropped off in Hilo for recycling may proceed directly to the designated area at the East Hawai‘i Organics Facility and do not need to go to the County Scale. Customers with other greenwaste for recycling must proceed to the scale house after dropping off your holiday tree.

Trees should be free from all decorations, stands, lights, tinsel and ornaments.  Please do not drop off artificial or flocked trees in the designated areas. Any flocked trees, artificial trees or trees with tinsel are not recyclable and may be disposed of in the regular trash chutes.

The Solid Waste Facility Attendants will direct the public to the proper drop-off point.  For more information or a map and directions to drop-off locations, go to https://www.hawaiizerowaste.org/facilities/

Also, please recycle your Kadomatsu decorations which are normally a combination of bamboo, pine and flowers. Kadomatsu is a tradition that began 600 years ago in Japan as a way of offering luck in the New Year.

Mahalo for recycling and keeping these resources out of the landfills!
