Recycle Hawai‘i Spotlights Recycling with National Fall Initiatives

Recycle Hawai‘i (RH) announces community initiatives sponsored by Keep America Beautiful (KAB), the nation’s leading recycling and litter prevention non-profit organization. These annual programs engage island residents and visitors alike about the importance of reducing our waste stream by reusing and recycling valuable resource materials.

The 5th Annual Recycle-Bowl Competition is a nationwide recycling incentive open to all elementary, middle and high schools in Hawai‘i. The four-week competition, which begins on October 19, culminates on November 15, America Recycles Day, known locally as “Hawai‘i Recycles Day.” Schools submit a final report of how much they recycled by volume or weight. Once reports are received and verified, KAB announces the top school winner for each state in early 2015.

As the KAB designated State Recycling Organization for Hawai‘i, RH partners with Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful (www.khib.org) and KAB Affiliates on all islands to encourage schools to participate in Recycle-Bowl as a way to kick off or improve school recycling programs across the islands. In striving to increase local support, participation, and enthusiasm for this national event, businesses, clubs and groups can become a “green” partner by sponsoring a cash award for the state winner(s). Award sponsors are acknowledged in press releases, websites and other event publicity. Anyone interested sponsoring an award (or other donation) for Recycle-Bowl, may contact RH Education Director Marsha Hee at 985-8725 or as soon as possible by September 25th.

America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day and coast-to-coast community-driven awareness campaign dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. It has been held on – and in the weeks leading into – November 15 since 1997. Businesses, community organizations, government entities, individuals and others are invited to host an America Recycles Day event.
