West Hawai‘i Greenwaste Program Changes Announced

January 2 - March 31, 2013

The County opened the new West Hawai‘i Organics Facility (WHOF) located adjacent to the West Hawai‘i Sanitary Landfill in Pu‘uanahulu (January 2, 2013). This Facility will accept greenwaste and untreated/unpainted wood pallets from businesses and residents.  The materials will be weighed at the County Scales. In the future, the West Hawai‘i Organics Facility will be able to accept other organic materials such as food and paper, helping to prolong the life of our landfill.  Changes were also implemented for acceptable loads at the Kealakehe Greenwaste Facility located at the Kealakehe Recycling & Transfer Station.  For more information on the changes in the Program please read our West Hawai‘i Greenwaste Program Frequently Asked Questions and visit our Greenwaste page.

Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance Goes Into Effect

January 17 - March 17, 2013

Starting on January 17, 2013 County of Hawai‘i "Businesses shall not provide plastic checkout bags to their customers" for free, they "may make plastic checkout bags available for purchase for one calendar year" up to January 16, 2014. (County of Hawai‘i Ordinance No. 12-1)

Using reusable shopping bags is one way to reduce the amount of single-use plastic checkout bags distributed on Hawai‘i Island.  Reusable shopping bags come in all shapes, sizes, materials and styles to suit your preference.  Don't forget to Shop with Aloha and take along your reusable shopping bags on your next trip to the store.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event - Pāhoa

March 3, 2013 - 8:30AM - 3:30PM
Pāhoa Recycling & Transfer Station

Bring your own automotive fluids, chemicals and poisons and other hazardous household wastes to the Pāhoa Recycling & Transfer Station collection area on March 3rd.  Business, farm, non-profit or government agency waste are NOT allowed.  Electronic waste (e-waste) is also NOT allowed.  For full details on what materials are and are not accepted please visit our Household Hazardous Waste page.

There will not be a concurrent collection event for reusable latex paints. Take your reusable latex paints to the Kea‘au Recycling & Reuse Center at the Kea‘au Transfer Station.

Customers should pack their items in spill-proof containers and be careful when transporting them to the event.  When at the event please remain in your vehicle in line until authorized personnel come to unload your vehicle.  For your safety and the safety of those around you please do not walk your hazardous materials over to the authorized personnel in the restricted area, this precaution is to prevent spillage and ensure fairness to those already waiting in line.  Mahalo for your kōkua.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication (including language interpreting) or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in this event should contact Chris at 961-8554 as soon as possible, but no later February 21, 2013.
